India in my mind

February 2008
   Nobuo Sakai

India is a longing and holy place for the people who do yoga, gigong, and meditate in Japan.

It is also the most tempting country for me.
Because I am very interested in not only religion but also the mysterious and spiritual world.

1989

One day , one of my friends who used to meditate with me introduced a book to me.
The title of the book is "AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOGI".
It is written by great saint Paramahansa Yogananda who passed Yoga down to Western societies for the first time.
I believe Yoga is the wisdom of India.

I feel nostalgia for the good old days and I am attracted by it. whenener I read this book.
It is a book 500 pages long.
I read it again and again.
I think it is the best book for me in my life.
I use "Yogananda" as my hundle and home page address like http://yogananda.cc on the
Internet.
It is gracious enough to do for me.

In October, I went to India with the instructor of Yoga and some friends who have interest in
the spiritual world.
It was my first time traveling abroard.
I strongly felt nostalgia for India (I have just returned home!) as soon as I arrived at Delhi airport and I breathed in the air.
I was convinced that I had been an Indian in the past.

After I came home, I met some Indians who live in Japan.
One of them was an overseas student, and asked me to drive.
Because one of her friends wanted to visit and see her at the end of the year.
Her friend lived 600 kilometers far from here and she was working there.
Ms.S who is from Delhi came by late-night bus, we picked her up and went for a drive along
the seaside which has a nice view.
Ms. S is very sophiscated and cheerful.
We got along well immediately.
She even said to me in joking, "We might have been brother and sister in the past." when we had to leave.

1990

I changed my job and I moved to other prefecture (Hiroshima).

In May I went to U.S.A for the second time.
At first, I arrived in Los Angeles, and stayed at Biltmore Hotel which is very historic for three nights.
Though I did not know that then, it was the place where Yogananda had passed away meditating ( it is called mahasamadhi) when he went over to America.

I often talked about India with my customers.
There was a lady who is very nterested in India.
She was going to get married and go to her honeymoon in India.
Her fiance also felt an interest in India.
She retired from her company after a while because of marriage.
Several weeks later, I met them in town by chance.
We felt happy and had spent some time talking about India in a coffee shop.
It was a first time to meet her fiance.
When he gave me his name card, I remembered something.
It was surprising that he had worked with Ms.S from Dalhi.
He learned English from Ms.S and the newly married couple were going to stay at Ms.S' house during their honeymoon.

I believe that was a "sign" of me telling that I had been an Indian in the past.

2006

In June, I stayed at Nipponzan Myouhoji for two weeks when I visited Tokyo as a part of a
movement for world peace.
People living there were very nice to me though that was the first time we met.
At that time, I met Bhikku Masao Ishitani who had returned home from India by chance.
He is from the northmost part of Hokkaido and is my brother's senior by a curious coincidence.
In August I met Bhikku Ishitani at my home town, Hiroshima on Atomic bomb memorial day
again.
After that we exchanged letters once.

2007

Buhikku Ishitani called from India and asked me if I know someone who would offer them a big car and drive them from Tokyo to Kumamoto (which is 1000kilometers).
Because he was going to come to Japan with five more members in May.
I am an obliging person, so I volunteered for the role.

In May it was an unforgettable memory for me to have stayed with them for two weeks.
It was a great satisfaction for me to meet " India of my home mind".

It is a great valuable thing for me to get along well with not only Buhikku Ishitani but also
the two other people who are very spiritual.
In addition, Sugirthan family from India and I got along well each other.
In fact, it was a little hard for us to communicate in English.
HoweverI have had a dream since I was young, one of them is setting up a home for orphants.
It is not an accident that Sugirthan is running his home for orphants.

After they left Japan, I began to study English to visit India again.
Some time later, one of my acquaintance called and asked me to teach Math to her daughter.
She is seventeen years old and goes to American school in Japan.
She can speak Japanese but her first language is English and is poor at Math.
She is as old as Sugila who is Sugirthan's daughter.
I teach Math to her but I learn English from her.

I think everything that happens has a meaning.

2008

Last two years, since I met not only nice but also respectable people, I decided to visit the priest of Tenriism.
Because Tenriism is my basic faith.
I spent four days from the end of the last year to the beginning of this year with some priests and a lot of codial believers in Tenri city.
Since I was able to look back at my basics, I felt refreshed and great on New years day.

I returned home on January 3rd, and I had a call from Bhikku Ishitani the next day. I have heard that there would be a Buddhist Peace service of Dagoba in February.
Though I have not decided yet if I should go or not, I answered " Yes, I will" then.
If we change our mind, our circumstances will also change.
Next day, on 5th, an acquaintance of mine called me.
That made me extend new human relations and gave me another work.
As if my visiting India blessed me with that.

This time I am going to contemlate my soul in India.
Though a lot of things will happen, I assure that I will be able to get something great to change my life considerably in these travels.
Holy earth India on my mind!
I would like to express to the people who have relationship tie my deeply gratitude.
